Balayage

If you’re looking to lighten up your hair then one of the most popular avant-garde colouring techniques currently available is balayage. The final outcome is a sexy “grown out” style that gives you natural sun-kissed hues.

What is Balayage?

Balayage is a French term which can be pretty much translated as “to sweep”. The hair stylist literally sweeps a mixture of highlights from the roots to the tips. This is done freehand (as opposed to using foils or cap highlighting methods) and as the stylist works towards the tips more mixture is applied.

What’s the process?
The hair stylist paints the lightening mixture on using a brush and paddle and starting from the root they work their way to the tip in free flowing “sweeping” movements. The application depends on things like hair length and desired results – for example you may want softer, dulcet tones or more daring contrasting highlights – talk to your stylist and they’ll advise you on what suits you best.

Why would you want a “Balayage”?
As balayage is so versatile and is literally painted on you can decide not only what strands you want highlighted but also how light you want to go. The technique creates a beautiful multi tonal effect in the hair strands and gives an extra dimension to the resulting hairstyle. Many top sylists now consider balayage to be the most natural highlighting method available leaving the hair with a rich array of caramel and honey-toned hues. So if you’re looking for extra depth to your hair or that sun kissed look – then a balayage is definitely for you.

How long does it last?
The essence of balayage is to look natural and as such there’s no obvious re-growth – so usually it would last 3-4 months.

Who’s getting it done?
Balayage is one of the most popular treatments in salons right now and is a favourite for celebs such as Ashley Simpson, Jessica Biel, Alexa Chung and Gisele Bundchen.
